Against all odds

When Mr RLM Mchunu was appointed principal on 12 September 2022, Phikiswayo Primary School had just 221 learners and was struggling. The infrastructure was poor, morale was low, and the community had lost faith in the school.

In just four years, everything changed. Enrolment grew from 221 to 1,098. The Grade 3 pass rate climbed from 76% to 89%. The Grade 6 pass rate rose from 79% to 91%. The school now has 19 educators plus 4 SGB-paid staff, 34 classrooms, and a full programme of sport, cultural, and academic activities.

This turnaround is the work of a committed principal, dedicated teachers, a strong School Governing Body under chair Mr MT Mbazo, and a parent community that believed in the school's future. Against all odds, Phikiswayo is rising.
